Example Black Forest

Examples for Results of Analyses in the Region of Black Forest

At December 26, 1999, large areas of Southwest Germany, the Northern Switzerland and Western France was afflicted by a big winter storm named Lothar. The storm left behind large damaged areas in the forests, in Germany mainly in the Northern Black Forest. Especially coniferous forest was affected. The Landsat-7 image of 2001 shows the damaged areas, mostly cleared out, with different density of the growing ground vegetation and first states of the reforestation.

The region of Northern Black Forest between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt in satellite images from 1990 on the left (Landsat-5 TM) and 2001 on the right (Landsat 7-ETM+), bands 5, 4 and 3 in RGB. In the Northwest part of the images, the city of Bühl can be seen. The images cover an area of about 40 km by 30 km.

In the change product, the storm damaged areas as result of the storm Lothar form the largest change areas. They have been mapped in the class 324 - transitional woodland / shrub, in 1990 mainly part of the class 312 - coniferous forest. In the NW of the map, several new urban fabric areas and industrial / commercial units are visible, in the peripherals of the city of Bühl, in the East some transition areas in the agriculture can be detected.
